What Are Dentures?

Dentures are custom-made artificial teeth and gums created by dentists to replace missing natural teeth. They can be full or partial, depending on whether they replace all teeth on the top or bottom gum line, or only a few missing teeth. These removable prosthetic devices are designed to fit your mouth perfectly, providing functionality and a natural-looking smile.

What Are Dentures Made From?

In the past, dentures were made from materials such as porcelain or plastic. However, modern dentures are made from a hard resin material. This durable resin provides strength and stability to the artificial teeth. The supporting structure of dentures, which mimics the natural gum line and holds the teeth in place, is also made from a similar resin material.

Alternatively, a flexible polymer material may be used to ensure a snug fit along the natural gum line.

It’s important to note that the materials used for denture teeth are more susceptible to chipping or cracking if dropped or mishandled. Additionally, they wear down faster compared to natural teeth, typically requiring replacement every five years.

Full Dentures

Full dentures, otherwise known as complete dentures, are dentures that replace all your natural teeth. You can have them fitted for your top or bottom gum line and are held in place by suction and/or the help of an oral adhesive. Just like partial dentures, they are easily removable.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are often used instead of other tooth replacement methods when the surrounding natural teeth are not strong enough to support structures such as dental bridges, or when more than one or two teeth are missing. The partial dentures are fitted to the part of the gum line that they will sit on and fasten to nearby natural teeth to keep them from falling out of place. However, they are not permanently fastened and can be easily taken out at any time for cleaning and while sleeping.

Implant Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are dentures that are anchored by dental implants. A dental implant is a permanent fixture anchored to the jawbone and can be used to replace any number of teeth. They’re comprised of a metal post (usually titanium), and a custom crown that looks just like a natural tooth. Implant-supported dentures eliminate any worry about slippage and allow you to regain a strong bite and natural speech.

Cleaning Your Dentures

To maintain good oral hygiene, clean your dentures twice-daily like your natural teeth. Remove them and rinse under clean water. Brush with a denture brush or soft toothbrush with mild soap or denture cleaner. Rinse thoroughly and clean your gums and natural teeth while dentures are out. Avoid abrasive cleaners, regular toothpaste, or electric toothbrushes as they are too abrasive.

Preserving Your Dentures

To ensure your dentures last long and remain in great condition, it’s crucial to remove them before sleeping. This will prevent any damage or dislodging of the dentures while also allowing your gums to rest. It’s best to fully submerge your dentures in warm water, making sure the temperature isn’t too hot to prevent any misshaping. If your dentures have metal components, it’s advised to steer clear of denture soaking solution, as it can tarnish the metal.

As a special offer for our denture patients, we’re providing a Polydent denture kit to assist in keeping their dentures clean and extending their lifespan.
